Earlier this week, we had our Comics Experience Book Club.  This time we did Captain America, Winter Soldier Volume 1.

More after the jump

This is the story that brought Captain America’s sidekick Bucky back into the world of the living.  I should point out (for noncomic fans) there was an unwritten rule that only three people in comics had to stay dead, Bucky, Uncle Ben, and Jason Todd (the second Robin).  Of course, Jason Todd returned in Under the Hood  and Bucky returns in Winter Soldier.   This was an interesting choice because Andy was at Marvel and the Assistant Editor on the book at the time it was coming out.

As usual, the club provided invaluable insight into this classic Marvel tale.  Of course there were presentations. Mine went on far too long as I traced (in my own warped way) the history of the character, publication and went through Caps various side-kicks, romances and compared Golden age Bucky  to Brubaker’s revamp.

But, by far, the most interesting discussion was the analysis done by Janine Frederick (an up and coming creator and Zuda finalist) who analyzed how the art in the book hearkened back to 1950’s soldier sketches.  And the effective use of color to convey emotion. Very impressive things that I completely missed when I read the book.  Other discussions included how what death means in comics, Brubaker’s background and the pacing of the story.

For those that are curious, my powerpoint appears below.

The next book of the month is Scott Pilgrim volume 1.  If you want to join the Comics Experience Creator Workshop, which includes the book club, you can sign up for it here.  You will be glad that you did.

I put link if you wanted to buy any of the books.
