Cream of the Cup--Book Shipping 8-12

Here is The Cream of the Cup, where I highlight the week's most interesting books (to me at least).

Picture
Atomika Issue #10--The art in Atomika is incredible and the book should be bought for that alone (not to mention that the artist is one of the greatest guys in comics).  However, the story is great as well (Think Thor as a communist.)  I used to only be able to get this at conventions.  But, recently this book became available in Previews and therefore you should be able to get it in your local shop.  If you can't, you should ask for it to be ordered.  This issue features Atomika Koschei the Deathless. Cover by Travis Charest.  Writer: Andrew Dabb; Art: Sal Abbinanti

Blackest Night 2—Geoff Johns has been building this serious since Green Lantern Rebirth in 2004 and the plaaning shows.  The dead rise across the DC Universe, bringing terror and darkness with them.  This month the Black Lanterns get some new members. Witness the birth of a new Black Lantern SuperTeam. Written by Geoff Johns; Art and cover by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert; Variant cover by Mauro Cacioli; Sketch variant cover by Ivan Reis

Escape from Wonder-land Issue #1

Escape from Wonder-land features the next story in the Wonder-land series from Zenoscope (they also make of the great Grimm Fairy Tales series).  I recently picked up Return to Wonderland and found it pleasantly disturbing.  These books feature top notch horror and not for the faint of heart. But, if you love your stories dark and disturbing.  This is the book for you.  I would start with the Return to Wonderland Trade.  Then move onto the Tales of Wonderland trades (volume 1 and volume 2)and then the Beyond Wonderland trade before tackling this issue.  (Or you can just Wikipedia the story to catch up).  Story by Ralph Tedesco, Joe Brusha & Raven Gregory Written by Raven Gregory Art by Daniel Leister

Hero Comics--This 32-page, no-ads comic, features an original American Flagg! story by Howard Chaykin, and original stories by Gene Ha, Bill Willingham, David Lloyd, and Kaare Andrews.( See attachment for cover art). The book also has  original work by Arthur Adams as well as Hero Initiative testimonials from Gene Colan, Bill Messner-Loebs and Josh Medors.  Buy this book, it's for a good cause.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1--Wow, did Ultimate Spider-Man really come out ten years ago.  Now that the misery and death of this year very dark Ultimatum is over, this book promises to redefine the status quo of Spider-Man for the next generation! I'm not sure if that is true, but it was a pretty darn good issue. Writer Brian Michael Bendis, Artist David Lafuente
