The Emmy Awards Had Some Surprises

Neil Patrick Harris has been many things: Prodigy Doctor, insecure superhero, singing supervillain, Tony host and womanizing egotists.  Now, he can add successful Emmy host to his resume.  Although last night's show had some predictable winners, there were also a lot of surprises.  Plus, there was even more evidence that we need a Pushing Daisies DVD movie.

More (including the complete list of winners and video after the jump.

Picture
, It was a night for repeats as five of the top six categories featured the same winners from last year, including 30 Rock and Mad Men, (both of which had the most nominations in the comedy and drama categories, respectively.  This is the third year 30 Rock has won.  I should also mention that The Amazing Race won again in the Reality Competition category. (The Amazing Race has won so many times, the academy needed to create another category to give other reality shows a chance.  Intervention took the award for Reality Program.) Even Justin Timberlake won for the second time for guest actor in a Comedy Series for Guest Actor in a Comdey Series for Saturday Night Live Mother Lover,  follow-up to previous winner,  D*** in a Box.

There were also some surprises. Toni Collette won best actress in a comedy for Showtime’s “United States of Tara.”  Jon Cryer finally received an emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy for “Two and a Half Men.”  Most importantly, Kristin Chenoweth, a great lady and a wonderful actress won best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as Olive Snook in the now-cancelled “Pushing Daisies.”  C'mon, this is a sign that we need a Pushing Daisies movie.  I will point out that the LA Times has an interesting observation that the winner in every acting category but one was more than 40 years old.

Neil Patrick Harris' did a great job as host.  His opening number and monologue is available at BuzzSugar And while he did not win for How I Met Your Mother, I should mention that the season premiere of that show is on tonight.

And of course there was a dance number from our friends ABCs Dancing With the Stars, which also premieres tonight.
