The Law for Comic Book Creators Essential Concepts and Applications
(McFarland)

Since the creation of the comic book, there has been a lot of legal conflict and confusion where concepts such as public domain, unincorporated entities and moral rights are involved. As a result, comics creators are frequently concerned about whether they are protecting themselves. There are many questions and no single place to find the answers—that is, until now.
Entertaining as it instructs, this book seeks to provide those answers, examining the legal history of comics and presenting information in a way that is understandable to everyone. While not seeking to provide legal advice, or case history this book presents the legal background in plain English, and looks at the stories behind the cases. Every lawsuit has a story and every case has lessons to be learned. As these lessons are explored, the reader will learn the importance of contracts, the precautions necessary when working with public domain characters, and the effects of censorship.

Tales from the Comics Experience

Some dream about their stories, others put them into action. These thirteen writers, with their sights set on comic stardom, have done just that. Under the guidance of Comics Experience mastermind Andy Schmidt, the crew learned what makes great comics and then applied their own ideas accordingly. You hold in your hands thirteen original stories, each one a product of the Comics Experience class, told the way the artists wanted to tell them. This anthology is a collection of different genres and styles, each one by someone who has only begun to tell their story. As you read this anthology, you will see thirteen talents practically bursting to tell their stories. After completing Andy Schmidt's (IDW) Comics Experience's first online writing class, these 13 writers went out and found equally talented and hungry artists to bring their stories to life.

From Here to There Issue 2 (Resolution Comics)

Action. Drama. Mystery. Suspense. The Supernatural.
This issue has got awesomeness pouring out of its pages. We've got a ghost story, written by FH2T veteran Joe Sergi (Economy of Scale, the zero issue), that will give you chills. It's aptly called "The Haunted Rickshaw", and was drawn by Santiago Espina. There's also a story that takes place on a river rafting trip. What? Rafting's not exciting enough for you? Wait until you see what's waiting for the rafters. This story, "Dark Spot on the Water", was written by Ross May, and drawn by another blast from the past, Marc Jameson (the artist for Economy of Scale). Next up is a retro Sci-Fi story called "Beyond the Ether, Into the Electric Cosmos". Think 50's futuristic. It was written by Dave Doub, and the art duties were performed by another FH2T alumni, Resolution Comics very own Scott Bradley (Missing Millionaire, the zero issue). And finally...I'm not quite sure what genre to put this story in. War? Horror? The horror of war? You can decide after you read it. It's called "The Tommy Cooker", and was written by Joe Sarnicola, with artwork by Gerry Fernandez. Gerry has done artwork for every single issue of FH2T, including the covers for #1 and #2. I told you we had an All-Star cast for this issue.
32 pages. Black & white, with a color cover.
I love the smell of blood...mixed with that of donuts..." - This is the thought process of a serial killer. The Maniac is attempting to complete his masterpiece. All he needs to do is collect all the right pieces. An arm here, a leg there...well, you get the idea. It's up to Inspector Travis Jameson and his partner Greta (with a little help from Detective Oratio Contrera) to stop this madman. Unfortunately, The Maniac already has his sights set on Travis.
This two issue comic was conceived from the creative minds of Azurek Studios, with artwork by Stefano Cardoselli and written by Rita Gorgoni. Both Rita and Stefano have worked with us before, on different From Here to There issues, and let me tell you...the only thing that tops their talent is the fact that they are super awesome to work with. Irene Langholm did an absolutely brilliant cover.
24 pages - black and white, plus bonus material.

Prose Fiction:
World's Beyond: A CAG Prose Project

There are other worlds, similar to ours but different in many respects. They may be alien worlds in galaxies far away, worlds in which humanity has met its dreadful end, worlds that already exist within our future. The possibilities stretch only as far as the imagination. But, no matter where, when or how these worlds exist, they are all one thing…WORLDS BEYOND.

A Thousand Faces Presents The Fall 2009 Issue of The Quarterly Journal of Superhuman Fiction

Issue 10 of The Quarterly Journal of Superhero Fiction (Fall, 2009) features a story I wrote called “The Return of Power Boy.” I should note that this is the first story I ever authored. The story originally was supposed to be included as part of a Comic Geek Speak prose project that never manifested (listeners of the CGS podcast may recognize the chraracters named Peter and Bryan, who play a very important role in the story). The Return of Power Boy was my gateway into scifi and fantasy writing. Without giving too much away, the story provides a very dark look at what happens when the super villain wins his never ending battles against his heroic nemesis. In a strange case of coincidence, this story was the inspiration for my upcoming novel, Sky Girl: Rebirth, which will be released by iEnovel early next year. And while Sky Girl ended up being much different character and a more light-hearted book, there are definitely some common themes between the two tales.

Psi-Kotic (Metahuman Press)

Beatriz “Betty” Ortiz was always intuitive. This skill helped her survive two tours in Iraq. Now stateside, she is at the wrong place at the wrong time when a suicide bomber from a White Supremacist group strikes. The explosion horrifically scars Betty and imbeds pieces of the bomber’s human shrapnel under her skin. The explosion also gives Betty the subconscious ability to use 66% of her brain. As a result, Betty discovers that she merely has to touch a person and she will “learn” their skill and ability. But, Betty’s abilities come with a high price. The human shrapnel imbedded in her skin forces her to share her mind and memories with James Jefferson, the suicide bomber, who can take over her body when she sleeps. Betty discovers, through Jefferson’s memories, the location of the Order of White Loyal Supremacists, the group responsible for the bombing. When no one believes her, she realizes that she must stop the terrorists personally. Betty dons a colorful costume and adopts the identity of Psi-Kotic.

Public Domain: What Is It and Who Lives There By Joe Sergi
Lately, there has been a resurgence of Golden Age heroes. AC Comics is reprinting Golden Age stories in Men of Mystery, and Golden Age Comics have over 1,600 books available to legally download for free. Alan Moore used several literary characters to form his various League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books. Bill Willingham features several famous fairy tale characters in Fables. Most recently, Alex Ross created Project Superpowers, which stars heroes originally published by Fox Comics, Crestwood Publications and Nedor Comics. While the origins of each of these characters vary, they have come from the same place: public domain.

Other Work

Uncredited Work
I have had the privilege top work with some very talented people on some very big things. This work has included everything from editorial work to script doctoring to ghost writing to research to business advice. As this work is uncredited, (and a lot of it was unpaid), I can't tell you what it was. But, trust me, you'd love it. :-)
